On Monday, September 11th, the varsity girls’ golf team had their conference competition. This was the girls’ seventh tournament of the season which took place at the Oconomowoc Golf Club. The Classic 8 conference mini meet started at 3:30 p.m. and came to a close at 6:00 p.m. As a team, the girls took first place.

The team, which is coached by Mike Breaker, consists of seniors Gianna Gastrow, Skylar Phillips, and Sarah Ernst. It also includes juniors Emily Lauterbach and Caroline Kroeninger.

The five players started on different holes, but together all played the same set of nine holes. At the tournament, Kettle Moraine, Mukwonago, Waukesha, Catholic Memorial, Muskego, and Oconomowoc competed as well.

Kettle Moraine’s Abby Caviani gave Lauterbach and Ernst tough competition. Lauterbach finished the tournament with 38 strokes, Ernst with 39 strokes, and Senior Caviani with 36 strokes.

Their season started on August 7th and the girls have been preparing for their tournaments ever since.

Gastrow says, “We practice indoors depending on the weather and occasionally hit in simulators.”

Lauterbach says, “We practice by physically and mentally preparing and visualizing what we are going to do on the course.”

Gastrow says, “We work as a team by encouraging each other to do their best on the course and helping build good practice skills when we don’t have a tournament.”

The state competition is October 9th and 10th at University Ridge Golf Course in Verona, Wisconsin. Last year, the girls’ varsity team won the state competition also in Verona, Wisconsin.

Gastrow says, “It hasn’t improved from last year…we lost two crucial players from our varsity team and we don’t have talent that yet compares.”

Lauterbach says, “I feel that we played good enough to win, but we did not play to the best of our abilities. I know we can do better.”

The team has another tournament on September 13th in Merrill Hills.
