CMAs Not Just For Southerners

The 47th Country Music Awards aired Wednesday, November 6th. Students tuned in to watch their favorite country music stars perform and win awards like, female and male vocalists of the year, vocal duo of the year, and entertainer of the year.

The show opened with Luke Bryan and Florida Georgia Line singing Bryan’s “That’s my kind of night” and Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise.”

Ashley Banaszak, a junior at Arrowhead says, “my favorite part of the awards was when Luke Bryan sang in the beginning.”

Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley, who hosted the awards for the fifth consecutive time, started the awards out with a mash up of jokes about current events. Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley both performed during the awards. Carrie Underwood, who according to People magazine changed, “a total of ten times,” through the duration of the show sang a melody of past popular songs of hers.

Kiley Beth, a junior at Arrowhead says, “their (Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood)  jokes were so bad the only one that was good was the one about Obamacare.”

Banaszak says, “I like them. I thought their joke about Miley Cyrus was good.”

Many of the popular Country stars also performed including Little Big Town, Taylor Swift, Jason Aldean, The Band Perry, and Hunter Hayes.

Miranda Lambert was awarded with female vocalist of the year alongside her husband, who won male vocalist of the year.

Banaszak says, “Luke Bryan should have won male vocalist.”

Taylor Swift was awarded with the pinnacle award. This award is given to country singers who take their music to a worldwide audience. The award was presented by every  country artist Swift has opened for before her career took off.

Banaszak says, “I didn’t like Taylor Swift too much until she won that award and people brought up all the good things about Taylor Swift. I realize that she is a very good role model. She writes and sings her own songs. I think she is very talented.”

George Strait won entertainer of  the year.

Banaszak says, “George Strait should not have one entertainer of the year award. It should have been Luke Bryan or Jason Aldean or Blake Shelton.”

This year’s show brought in more than sixteen million viewers; three million more than last year. With almost two million Tweets, the CMA’s became the most talked about show on television.

Beth says, “country music is definitely becoming more popular. Country music is becoming more pop.”

Banaszak says, “the genera of country music is changing a little bit, but it is changing for the better.”
