For some Arrowhead students homework can be a real time consumer, especially for students in sports. A two hour practice can take a lot of time out of your day, and it can be a crunch for time after eating dinner. Also, having a game on that day can take up your whole night, especially if teams require you to get there early. Senior at Arrowhead, Mimi Bradley says “I stay up until at least 11:30 at night to finish homework every night.”

Stanford studies have shown that students homework load has led to sleep deprivation and other health problems. According to stanford.edu, homework can lead to extra stress when it is continually piled on, making it overwhelming to finish. Trying to balance extracurricular activities, family, friends and homework can be very difficult and time consuming for some kids . The study done by Stanford, in an area where the median household income exceeded 90,000 dollars per year, tried to find out how much the average kid studies a nights. They found the of those kids, 93% went to college and spent an average of 3.1 hours of homework per night.

Senior Arrowhead student Michael Einecke said, “I spend about three and a half hours every night on either homework and studying…Not being in a sport this year, helps me with my school work and I don’t have to work so hard on balancing everything after school.”

Also, Senior arrowhead student Ty Roznowski says “Usually I stay up until about 11 every night and spend 3 hours on homework.” He also added “When I have tests, I usually study for 45 minutes the night before.”

According to Stanford’s study on high school homework 56% of students say homework is the main stress causer and 43 % said that tests were the main stress cause. Only 1 % of people said homework does not cause stress whatsoever. Many kids said in this survey that they have less time for friends and even spending family time, or any other activities they enjoy on an everyday basis. Sometimes, kids even said that they had to drop the extra curricular activity just to reduce stress and make time for other things. This also depends on how hard the classes are or if they are taking AP’s of not.

However, the fall sports at arrowhead high school are coming to an end, so, some kids will have more time for homework and studying which can improve overall GPA’s. Since there are less sports in winter than there are in fall, there are more kids who have more time each night.
