Girls Track Season Begins

The girls track team competes at three levels during the season.  Competition is at the freshmen, junior varsity and varsity level.  The season started during the first week of March and end during the last week of May.  The Interim Head Coach is Curt Kaczor.   Sophomore Katie Mottl is on her second year of her track career.

“I did track last year, and it was a great experience.  I’m excited for what this next season brings,” says Mottl.

Practice is daily from 3:00 – 5:00 pm during the school week.  Either the varsity head coach or one of his assistants sometimes sets special practice times and Saturday practices.

“During practice this first week, we’ve done warm ups with stretches and drills and stretch at the end as well,” says Mottl.

Athletes at any grade level may compete at any level, depending on her ability.  A varsity letter is awarded based upon points accumulated during varsity competition or the meeting of pre-set varsity standards.

In the track manual it says, everyone is able to participate in track because it is a no cut sport.  Track allows everyone to improve.  Self improvement and personal accomplishment are the two primary goals that everyone on the team should be able to attain by the end of the season.

“Track definitely improved my running skills when I first joined last year and hopefully I can improve even more this year,” Mottl says.

There are six event groups: sprinters, hurdlers, distance runners, jumpers, pole vaulters, and throwers.  Each group is then separated by varsity and JV.  The event group an athlete will be in is determined by the athlete’s preference, the coaching staff’s evaluation of the athlete’s talent, and also the needs of the team, says the track manual.  The athletes have the opportunity to try each of the events and figure out what is best for them.

“Like last year, I am planning on sprinting,” Mottl says.
