The month of October is now halfway over and fall sports at Arrowhead are finishing up. Some fall athletics wrapping up soon at Arrowhead include boys’/girls’ cross country, girls’ golf, football, and boys’ soccer.

With the season’s end in mind, various athletes and coaches are evaluating their seasons, looking forward to playoff contention, and thinking about next year.

Girls’ golf ended on Tuesday, October 11th with the WIAA Division I Championships. The competition was spread out over two days (October 10th and 11th) and was held at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wisconsin. The end result was an Arrowhead first place finish; the first Arrowhead state championship team of the 2016-17 school year.

“The first day I would say I was more nervous when at the first tee-off, but got more confident as I progressed throughout the day. As for the team though, we were collectively confident going into the competition,” said junior golfer Sarah Ernst.

“For the second day, in the beginning, I was more confident starting off, but still slightly nervous. I didn’t do as good as I wanted starting off the second day, but once we got to the middle portion, I think we all knew we had the win because all the other teams were far behind us,” she said.

“The bus ride home after we won was tiring, but in the beginning, it was really exciting because we were just all really pumped up that we did it and had such a great season together and it was just the best way to end it.”

Ernst shot an 82 in her first state performance with no hole worse than a bogey.

As for boys’ varsity soccer, the team advanced to the state final last fall where they suffered a loss to Marquette. As of last week, they are the 2016 Classic 8 Conference Champions.

“We are going to be in the playoffs next week. For our performance, we are looking to make it to state again and win it this time; not take second,” senior Kyle Stemper said. The state tournament begins Thursday, November 3rd at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee.

This Friday also marks the last home game for Arrowhead football before proceeding forward in the playoffs. The game starts at 7:00 PM at Taraska Stadium and their opponent is Muskego.

“Looking back, I’d say we’ve had a pretty decent season and we’ve played pretty well in most games. It just happens that the games we haven’t played as well, the other team played very well. Like when we played North, we had a pretty bad game and they had a really good game, end when we came back and brought it really close, but our performance in the beginning of the game was bad that we ended up losing in the end. Luckily, however, we still clinched playoff position last week with a win over Waukesha South,” said the team’s right guard, senior Ian Priest.

On Saturday, the cross country teams will be racing Conference at Muskego. Last year, at the Conference meet, the Arrowhead boys’ freshmen, girls’ freshmen, boys’ JV, girls’ JV, boys’ varsity, and girls’ varsity reigned victorious over all the other Classic 8 teams.

The the boys’ team hopes to repeat the win, according to coaches Mike Mulrooney and Mike ‘Razor’ Ray.

“The goal is more than to just win this meet, we want to utterly dominate it. Last year, the JV team won by 47 points and the varsity won by 25. We want to see numbers like that again,” Coach Razor said.

“We want to have our top seven guys in the top ten for the varsity race which would place us all the under first team all conference title. The JVs are looking to do essentially the same thing by getting at least seven of the top ten be runners from Arrowhead,” says senior Sam ‘Jimmy Neutron’ Evert.

“I think we can get the top five finishers on Saturday to be all Arrowhead runners,” senior Matt Bringe says.

“If it’s anything at all like last year, it should be complete dominance,” senior Carson Kennedy said.

“As far as a season reflection goes, varsity has done pretty well, but I think we could be a little more focused especially since we are in a position where being state champs or runner-up is in reach. The JVs have been doing really good overall this year,” Evert says.
