Divergent Wins the Gold

The film adaptation Divergent premiered in theaters on Friday, March 24th. Divergent became number one in theaters over the weekend making it the second highest grossing movie so far this year.   Although the movie did make a lot of money, the reviews have not been good. Rotten Tomatoes has rated the movie “two stars.”

I really fail to understand how this movie got such bad reviews. I think this movie is interesting, dramatic and filled with romance. People of all ages could enjoy this film.  Many critics are saying because the movie was released around the Hunger Games that Divergent is getting compared to Hunger Games. This movie, although takes place in a Dystopian society like Hunger Games, is completely different than the Hunger Games.

Divergent does not get enough credit for its story. Divergent is not the same as Hunger Games, Twilight, or Harry Potter. Divergent is different within itself.

The title describes the movie perfectly. The movie stars Shailene Woodley who plays Beatrice, also known as Tris, (a girl living in a dystopian city). The society is divided into five factions including Candor, which values truthfulness, Erudite, which values knowledge, Dauntless, which values bravery, Amity, which values kindness, and finally Abnegation, which values selflessness.

The story starts when Beatrice needs to choose what faction she belongs in when in reality she has qualities of all factions, divergent. This is against what the society believes in because being Divergent is considered a threat to their “perfect” society. Tris tries to fight the society to break its structure and save her family and friends.

Divergent is the perfect coming of age film about finding what you believe in and who you are. Anyone that read the books will probably agree that the movie adaptation did a great job illustrating the book.

This movie was packed full of action, drama and romance that kept me intrigued throughout the whole film. The actors portrayed their character perfectly; Shailene Woodley did a phenomenal job at playing Tris. At first I was skeptical of her after seeing her in the overly emotional Secret Life of the American Teenager, but Woodley definitely swayed my opinion of her acting skills in Divergent.  She really did a good job depicting Tris’s bravery and love for her family. Woodley dove deep into the character and reflected her true qualities.

Theo James is the charming, British actor who played Four, Tris’s love interest in the film.  James really is what I pictured four to be like. He is the perfect good looking and talented actor to play Four. James and Woodley definitely played the perfect couple.  I couldn’t help but notice the great chemistry on screen between Woodley and James.  They gave off the perfect romantic vibe.

I really loved all the actors. They were similar to what I pictured the characters to be like. Miles Teller who played Peter, offered great comic relief to the story as well as played the perfect villain.  Kate Winslet, who also played one of Tris’s enemies, Jeanine also did an amazing job in the movie. I have never seen Kate Winslet play such a evil character before but she real hit the ball out of the park in this movie.
