Wrestling Season Coming Fast

The winter sports season is approaching, and this means wrestling.   The Warhawks season starts on December 5th when they face Port Washington at Arrowhead.

Austin Yde, a junior wrestler says:  “The end of last year was far from good.  As an individual I made a mistake at sectionals and it ended up costing me a trip to state.  As a team we fell apart at regionals and didn’t move on”.

Despite last year’s finish including the loss of seniors Andrew Crone (a two time state champion and Mitchell Berenz (a three time state place winner), there is plenty of reason to be optimistic.

In the offseason, the team has been practicing at Askren Wrestling Academy and participating in offseason tournaments.  This includes Yde, Joe Bergren, and Josh Cinelli, the 2013-2014 team captains for this year.

“I want to win conference for the second straight year, and my main goal is to win state,” says Yde.  “As a team, I want to go undefeated in conference duals and win the conference tournament.  I also want to qualify for team state.”

The Warhawks fell short of qualifying for team state last year.   The year before that, the team qualified for team state but lost in the first round.  Back in 2011, the team made it to the finals and ultimately became the state runner-up in D1 wrestling.

The team hopes to be back in the mix in Madison come March 7th, to wrestle against the other top teams in the state.
