Coming fresh off the 2016, the all time highest grossing year at the box office, 2017 possesses potential to take over that title due to a noteworthy palette of blockbusters.

Some of the biggest upcoming titles are from Disney, Warner Brothers, and Universal Studios. According to moviefone.com, the highest anticipated films are superhero movies (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-man: Homecoming, and Wonder Woman), the fifth installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, and Star Wars Episode VIII.

Starting off in 2017, the month of January, is off to a relatively strong start. Capping off the list as the current highest grossing movie of the year is the Chinese fantasy/action film Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back, a Chinese film produced by Lianrui. The film was released in the month’s final days and has already accumulated $167 million at the box office.

Next on the list at $131 million is Paramount’s xXx: The Return of Xander Cage starring Vin Diesel.

Rounding out the top three is arguably the most talked about movie in cinemas thus far: M. Night. Shyamalan’s Split produced by Universal Studios. The movie won its second weekend straight at the domestic box office and has accumulated $104 million worldwide.

“The movie was kind of funny to be honest. I know that it was supposed to be like a thriller movie, and it was scary at some points, but with all the personalities the main character/bad guy had, it came off as kind of humorous sometimes,” said junior Sophia Gritzmacher about Split. “As far as other movies I’m looking forward to, I don’t really know yet. I just kind of see what my friends want to and follow whatever’s big at the time.”

Going into February, the movies with the highest speculation of box office explosion are Rings, Lego Batman, and John Wick: Chapter Two.

Rings is a reboot of sorts to the 2002 film: The Ring. According to Entertainment Weekly, many of the fans satisfied by Split, are in the target audience and likely attendees of Rings.

Lego Batman premieres February 10th in the U.S. and is a spinoff of 2014’s The Lego Movie. Canadian actor Will Arnett is reprising his role as the voice of Batman for the film.

As for John Wick: Chapter Two, which also premieres February 10th, Keanu Reeves is reprising his role in the sequel to Summit Entertainment’s surprise 2014 hit John Wick.

“I think that Lego Batman is going to actually be pretty well done. I was definitely satisfied with the Lego Movie and how Batman was portrayed in it so I think that a spinoff of his character arc was actually a pretty good idea. I’m usually skeptical of spinoffs because they’re usually just bait for more profit for the studio, but in this case, I actually trust the producers. As a matter of fact, I have already purchased a ticket for the movie. I typically buy superhero movie tickets way in advance because they fill the theaters up oftentimes. Even though this is just an animated movie, it’s still a superhero movie to me, and quite frankly, I have higher expectations for this movie than I do for Wonder Woman to be honest,” says senior Jack Vento.

“Looking forward, there are a lot movies I’m really hyped up for this year. Spider-Man: Homecoming is a close second, but Star Wars Episode VIII is definitely at number one for me because I’ve really liked both the Star Wars movies that have been released the last couple of years and I don’t foresee this installment breaking that trend. If anything, it’ll probably be better than Episode VII and Rogue One,” Vento said.
