Phong Pham’s College Application Process

Arrowhead Senior Phong Pham began his college application process during the summer of 2014.  Pham says he looked for colleges with programs in his preferred field of Nuclear Engineering.  He also says that besides majors other factors of colleges had limited impact on his choices.

“I don’t know, [I wasn’t looking for] really anything [in a college],” says Pham.

Pham applied to University of Minnesota Twin Cities, Georgia Technical College, University of Wisconsin Platteville, and University of California Berkeley.

Although Pham says he has yet to hear back from any of the colleges he applied to, he says he would prefer to attend Berkeley..

“Berkeley sounds nice,” says Pham.

Pham says that the hardest part of his college application process was filling out the applications online.

“[Out of all the colleges I applied to] only one [college] would accept Parchment,” says Pham.

Parchment is an online transcript service Arrowhead High School uses to electronically send high school transcripts.

Pham says he also had this problem with sending in ACT scores.

“I had to enter in my scores by hand which was a huge pain,” says Pham.

Despite Pham’s difficulties with ACT scores and high school transcripts, he says thatw riting the college essays were easy.

‘Surprisingly [the college essays] weren’t that hard,” says Pham.

“[Juniors,] don’t procrastinate.  Figure out what you want to do [for college] or just plan to go to a big college to find yourself,” says Pham.
