Locks of Love: Helping Kids in Need

To help children in need, one organization did not raise six million dollars worth of food or clothing—but they raised over six million dollars of hair.  Locks of Love is a unique, non-profit organization that makes wigs for children with medical issues that lead to hair loss.

Locks of Love.org says, “Our mission is to return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children.”

Locks of Love donates the most wigs to children with alopecia, an autoimmune disorder where hair follicles stop working.  It is most common in children under the age of 20 and in just the United States over 4.5 million people suffer from it.  According to Webmd.com, the degree of hair loss varies with each patient and there is no known cause or cure.

The second highest disease that Locks of Love gives recipients hair is cancer.  There are twelve major childhood cancers—ranging from the different forms of leukemia to bone cancer.

Kids v Cancer.com says, “Each year around 13,500 children are diagnosed with cancer in the US, that’s more than a classroom of kids a day.”

Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are common treatments used to help cure cancer.  Chemotherapy may cause hair loss depending on the duration of treatment and radiation therapy may cause permanent hair loss in patients.

When donating hair to Locks of Love, the minimum hair length is ten inches, which can be highlighted or permed.  The hair must also must be in a ponytail or braid before being mailed to Locks of Love.

The mailing address of Locks of Love is 243 Southern Boulevard, West Palm Beach, Florida 33405-2701.
