From Sectionals to State

On November 15th in Madison, this year’s Arrowhead girls swim team won state. Nine girls on the team swam in the state meet–each qualified for state in sectionals last friday.

These girls include Lindsey Adamski, Maddie Barta,  Abbie Cabush, Maggie Held, Rocky Laabs, Taylor Stoll, Kelly jacob, Megan Doty and Alyssa Lewandowski.

Rocky Laabs is a junior on the team and broke two records at state: one in the 200 and the other in the 500 freestyle. For the 200 meter freestyle she got a time of 1:49.45 and for the 500 meter freestyle she got a time of 4:43.

Rocky says to get to state, she first had to get through conference with the other Classic 8 schools. At sectionals each team was allowed 18 entries. Each of the girls entered made it to state.

“It was fun, we had a lot of fun the whole swim team went and supported us,” says Laabs.

Laabs says the biggest competitor they had going into state was Waukesha south because they had won three of the previous state titles.

“We’ve always gotten second so it was good to beat them and get first,” says Laabs.

Laabs participated in club swimming with the Lake Country Phoenix swim team, and eat healthy until after state. She says she practiced everyday sometimes twice a day for about two hours. Practice could end being four hours on some days. On the days when the swimmers did dry land with weight workouts practice, she swam for two hours.

Laabs said she made friends on the team, and she really liked their team spirit at state. Some of the girls on the team that weren’t competing at state still showed up and supported their teammates.

The team also did some charity work including donating to I Back Jack, food drive for the Hartland food pantry and a 5K run for make a wish.
