What Does My Garbage Man Mean To Me?

As the week progresses, the trash cans become full and are taken outside to be collected. It’s up to our neighborhood garbage collectors to take care of it.  But garbage men are underappreciated, even though collecting garbage is very demanding. According to http://www.myfuture.edu.au garbage collectors work in all weather conditions.

A garbage collector can mean many things. You ride on the truck to make sure everything is ok with the loads; you could collect the trash and load it onto the trucks; you could be operate the machines; and you could drive the street sweeping machinery. Lots is done to keep our streets clean.

My family doesn’t have a garbage collector because my dad likes to take our trash to the dump. Over the years, he has gotten very close to the garbage collectors. On a few occasions, he has brought me along and I have watched the garbage men take our family trash, and separate items one by one to the proper bins. I watched this in my dad’s warm truck and I remember thinking how cold the men must get.

The garbage collectors in my area are nice and caring.  Whenever I have gone with my dad to the dump, they always remember my age, and ask me how school is going.  And the times I don’t go with my dad, they ask him to pass on their hellos. I have a big family of all girls, but the garbage men can always manage to remember each one of ours names, age and our grade levels. It’s not often that I go to the dump with my dad, so it’s touching how they keep me in mind, even though I can’t remember their names.

Workers will spend three-quarters of their day outside dealing with not just garbage but also the elements. Their work areas usually contain elements that may aggravate asthma and other respiratory problems. Garbage men do a lot of lifting, carrying and climbing so this job not for people with physical limitations.

Though being a garbage man can be very demanding, it can also be fun. At the dump my family’s trash goes to, they host a luncheon once a year. Though most people would think having a lunch at a dump is a repulsing idea, it is surprisingly pleasant.  The men who work there are very talkative and friendly. They serve tasty food and drinks for little to no cost.  And they also provide you with t-shirts that say “I ate at the dump today!” This is a shirt my dad proudly wears around town.

To me garbage men are nice, respectable people who do an amazing job keeping our neighborhoods clean. I give them credit for the long hours they put in going through people’s trash and making sure the correct items get recycled, and also for being able to put up with the harsh winter season. We should give credit where credit is due and take the time every so often say thank you to our neighborhood garbage men.
