On Tuesday May 16th, Netherrealm Studios released their followup to their popular Injustice: Gods among Us. Injustice 2 is a fighting game that uses characters from DC Comics such as Superman and Batman.

Netherrealm is most well known for their Mortal Kombat, or MK, line of games (most recently Mortal Kombat X) and the controversy that the extreme violence in them creates. Although the Injustice line of games have a very similar combat system, they’re family friendly by comparison as they’re only rated T for teen.

Injustice 2 makes the third Netherrealm game featuring DC Comics characters. The second was Injustice: Gods among Us which was very well received. Their first was Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe, which was a failure both commercially and critically.

Many people have been saying that the character Deadshot is far too strong due to his great zoning abilities. This has led to many casual players calling him overpowered and a “spam character”. While it’s true that he’s a very strong character at the moment (competitive players are putting him in their top threes) top players point out that there is a lot of counter play to his zoning abilities. One of the abilities that can counter his zoning is the meter burn roll which is something every character can do. Not to mention Deadshot has really hard matchups against Superman, due to his powerful full screen control, and Atrocitus due to his great rush down and block pressure.

For my own top three I would put Deadshot at the top. His overall zoning is unparalleled and a good read on approach could lead to a big combo. Next I would put Atrocitus. First of all he has an amazing trait that makes his moves plus frames on block (meaning that the block stun lasts longer than the move takes to end) and he has a full screen set up off of his blood pool making his set ups very easy. The only weakness he really has is he can’t play aggressive when his trait is down and his blood pool is negative on block. Finally number three is Black Adam due to high damage off of both combos and projectiles.

Injustice 2 is a direct sequel to Injustice: Gods among Us. The first game had many comics leading up to the climax in the story of the game. There were more released between then and now to fill the gap between the two games. As of now the Injustice comics are the best selling comics for anything Marvel or DC have put out in the last decade.

The premise of the story is that Superman creates a Regime in which he rules after the Joker kills his wife and detonates a nuke in Metropolis. In doing so he all but eliminates crime, but the people live in fear of him. Seeing this Batman creates a resistance called the Insurgency to oppose him, and the Justice League ultimately wars with itself.

Despite the fact that Injustice 2 has only been out for a little over a week, there have already been two high profile tournaments with none other than Sonicfox coming out as the current top player. As of now he has played hundreds of games and has only lost two. It will be interesting to see how the metagame develops and whether or not someone will finally dethrone the one and only Sonicfox.
