This past weekend, Marvel Studio’s latest film, Doctor Strange, opened to a $85 million opening. Trailing the superhero flick was Dreamworks Animation’s  Trolls with $46 million, and the first Mel Gibson-directed film in a decade, Hacksaw Ridge, at $15 million.

Marvel Studios’ last fourteen films (dating back to Iron Man in 2008) have been on top of their respective box office opening weekend (according to boxoffice mojo), Doctor Strange being the most recent addition to that list.

Not only has the movie delivered solid numeric figures, but the critical acclaim has been exceptional as well. Doctor Strange currently sits at a 90% positive review rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8/10 rating on IMDb. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone describes the films as being “Buoyantly entertaining.” Travers continued his praise of the film saying, “See it in 3D, IMAX, people, and you’re in for the hallucinatory head trip of the year. And having Cumberbatch around really raises the bar on what’s possible in comic-book fantasy.”

The visuals were definitely a contributing effect for intrigued viewers. According to Variety, 47% of the film’s domestic gross stemmed came from 3D/Real D screenings. Furthermore, Doctor Strange’s global IMAX accumulation on opening weekend was $24.2 million. Overall, the movie’s worldwide total stands at $325.4 million.

In relevance to fan appreciation, Doctor Strange resonated even slightly better than it did with critics with a 91% fan approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Arrowhead senior, Jack Vento, was one of the many satisfied by Marvel’s latest. “Well, I would have to say I definitely enjoyed it. Probably my number two or three movie of the year so far, sitting behind Captain America: Civil War and resting pretty comfortably next to Deadpool. I can’t yet decide if it’s better or worse. I really enjoyed what this brought to the table in terms of cosmic entities and that realm of the Marvel Cinematic Universe  that we have not seen so far even though we got a little bit of it in Guardians of the Galaxy, but we hadn’t see much of the Multiverse yet until now. That aspect is something that I, personally, am very excited about because the Multiverse really brings together really interesting stories we probably would have never seen in the Marvel Universe, but can now.”

“I also liked how the movie was really colorful and I think Benedict Cumberbatch did a really good job. I’m pretty sure this was the only fan cast that we’ve ever had that actually worked out. Lastly, it was a nice touch how they sprinkled in the thing in the credits about how you shouldn’t use your phone when you drive since Strange himself got into an accident in the movie by doing so, which is always a good message to bring to attention,” Vento said.

With the motion picture looking to win its second box office weekend in a row, things appear to be on an incredibly successful path this year for Marvel Studios, but perhaps more so, for its parent company: Disney. The current worldwide box office accumulation for Disney this year is $5.85 billion; the highest in company history. Although Doctor Strange is its latest boast, two more still follow before 2017 rolls around.

On the week of Thanksgiving, Disney is releasing its latest animation, Moana, and in mid-December, the 16th for U.S., the Star Wars spinoff, Rogue One, is hitting theaters and is projected to be atop the box office for nearly a month.  With those films yet to come, Disney is looking to surpass the $6.89 billion box office mark that Universal Studios pulled off in 2015, thus aiming for history’s highest grossing value for a film studio in a single year.

Doctor Strange has showtimes listed at the local theaters of Delafield’s Marcus Hillside Cinema (2950 Hillside Drive) and Brookfield’s Marcus Majestic Cinema (770 N Springdale Road.)
