September comes to a halt as today marks the first day of October. That means trees are soon to be adorned in hues of red, yellow, and orange. Kids are going shopping for Halloween costumes, and cold weather is well on its way. That being said, heading into October, there is an abundance of activities ensuing for Arrowhead students and athletes this weekend.

The month starts off with various athletic competitions and a handful of club activities as well as the Homecoming dance. The dance will begin at 7:30 PM at the North Campus West Gym Saturday, October 1st.  Heading the dance’s setup will be the members of Student Senate and they’ll be undergoing preparations from 7:30 AM to about 12:00 PM. One of the Student Senate advisors, who are responsible for organizing the event, is social studies teacher Tamara Varsos.

Varsos said, “Once everyone gets here, we’re going to be setting up right away. At the dance, we’re responsible for coat checks among other small tasks for just flurries of people. The four to five hours that we’re setting up, everyone is working really hard.”

Homecoming is the biggest event for Student Senate this month. Varsos said they’ll spend the rest of the month planning for the winter activities such as the food drive, blood drive, giving tree, and Santa’s workshop.

“November through January is our community service focused time and I think that it’s a lot of kids favorite projects of the year,” says Varsos.

Concerning athletics, both the Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country Teams have meets an hour plus drive south of Hartland. In Kenosha, at UW Parkside, the Boys’ Varsity team are looking to win their second consecutive meet. Last Saturday, at the Midwest Invitational in Janesville, Wisconsin, the Arrowhead Boys’ Varsity separated themselves from the second place team, Neenah, by 78 points. After the Midwest Invitational, Arrowhead jumped from fourth to second place in the state rankings.

“There’s going to be a lot of tough competition on Saturday, but I think we stack up very good against the other team. The goal is to get our top five Varsity runners in the top fifteen places as well as win the meet of course,” Coach Mulroney said in a team meeting on Wednesday.

As for the girls Varsity cross country team, they will be racing not at UW Parkside, but rather even further south at The Wheaton Invite in Wheaton Illinois. The girls team will be leaving for the meet Friday night and staying at a hotel prior to attending the meet the following morning, according to senior Megan Olshanski. This is also an important race for the girls team as they too are ranked second in the state for division one cross country. As for the JV team, they will be racing at Parkside with the boys’ teams.

In addition to the cross country races this Saturday, there is also a Varsity volleyball tournament at Middleton.

“We’re leaving fairly early on Saturday and we expect to do well in the pool play, but not so much in bracket play. The reason for that is after playing a lot of pool play matches, the team typically likes to get heading home, so we make our statements in the pool play so that we don’t have to participate in an abundance of bracket games afterwards,” says senior Connor Bergersen.
