Best Buddies is Back for Another Year

Arrowhead Best Buddies is returning for the 2014-2015 school year for another year of fun and activities in the Hartland community.  The club hosted activities last year such as tye dying, going to local dances, going out for dinner, and costume parties. With the returning year, brings new leadership on the team.  Isabelle Gallagher and Joey Filmaniwz, seniors, will take over as president of the club following Elena Lopez’s role last year.

Best Buddies allows for students with disabilities to receive a “buddy” for the academic school year.  This pair will spend time going on fun outings about once per week.  Such outings include ice cream at Culvers, ice skating, and a movie at the theater.

“Last year, I had so much fun with all the things I did with my buddy,” said Alyssa Stark, senior, a member of Best Buddies.

The club also performs a talent show every year that creates revenue for the club and its necessities. This talent show is held in the Arrowhead theater and brings in a big crowd every year.  Such acts last year included dances to Selena Gomez, singing to Jack Johnson, and performing the famous “Cup Song.”

“The talent show is one of the funnest nights of the year.  Last year everyone worked so hard to pull together their act and it turned out great,” said Stark.

Not only does the audience get to enjoy the show, but also the silent auction held after the curtains close.  Members of the club donate to the auction. Such items included spa packages, cooking pots, and certificates to the movies.

Another activity in store for the Best Buddies clan is a trip down to Milwaukee for the annual Bucca de Beppo dinner and dance at a local high school.  Best Buddies clubs from surrounding areas gather at the dance, which allows for many new friendships and interactions in the night.

“Everyone gets down at the dance! It’s laughter the entire night,” said Stark.

As Best Buddies gets organized for the upcoming year, all members of the club are excited for a year of fun once again.
