With the weather getting colder and snow becoming heavier, Arrowhead students are looking for ways to stay active in the outdoors. Whether you enjoy skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, sledding or ice skating, the Hartland area and beyond has endless options for winter sports.
The Naga-Waukee Ice Arena offers open skating for $7.00 per skater and $3.00 to rent a pair of skates. One review mentions the large parking space that allows for many people to enjoy the rink at once. “The best part is a huge parking lot with easy access to the doors. I recommend and will return,” Kevin B via Yelp in 2024, said. Arrowhead campus’s very own Mullet Center also has select free skating times at rates of $8.00 for adults and $7.00 for youth. Go to their website to find specific times for open skating as they change day to day.
The most popular snow tubing destination is Sunburst Ski Arena. It is a little farther away in Kewaskum, WI. However, it offers reasonable rates of $30.00 for a three hour time slot Friday-Sunday. On Thursdays, the time slot is 4 hours for the same price. If you buy passes the day of, it is $35.00 instead of $30.00. Sunburst also offers skiing and snowboarding rentals, lessons and season passes.
In addition to skiing and snowboarding, many Arrowhead students flock to hills like Ausblick, Little Switzerland and Cascade Mountain. Little Switzerland and Cascade offer day passes to non-members, while to ski at Ausblick you need to be a member or a guest of a member. Little Switzerland is recommended often because it is one of the closer public hills to the Hartland area. It also has a lot of run options. “They have a good variety of terrain with bunny hills, levels of terrain difficulty including freestyle,” Celeste L via Yelp in 2025, said.
An activity that does not require any professional facility is sledding. A lot of local parks have vast areas for sledding like Lisbon Community Park and Nashota Park. Most parks require passes that can be bought online or you can pay a fee entering the park. Other sledding options could be an open field, hills behind a church or school and of course your backyard.
No matter how you want to experience the winter weather, Hartland has endless places that encourage activity. Staying active during the winter is important to keep up morale while things like finals are approaching. Not everyone in the world gets to experience snow. Take advantage of the climate and send it on the ski hill or race your best friend on a sled.
