From May 24th through May 27th, students had a four-day weekend due to Memorial Day on the 27th. Now that students are back from break, starting on May 30th they have seven days left of school including exams. For seniors, May 28th through May 31st is their last week of school.
Freshman Natalie Sattler said, “I left on Thursday to go to Door County for the whole time, we stayed overnight the whole time and really enjoyed all of the activities that we had, including the warm weather.”
Memorial Day every year is a day when we remember veterans either that we know, or have known who have served and dedicated their lives to our country. Beginning in 1971, Memorial Day has always been the last Monday in May.
Business teacher and DECA Advisor Steve Melzer said, “I had a nice break. I spent time with my daughter, Mckenna, and we did some yard work, but also just spent time inside and we had a nice time together.”
Memorial Day was also declared a National holiday by Congress again in 1971. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers, by proclamation of Gen. John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic.
According to this website, “After World War I, the holiday evolved from just honoring those who died in the Civil War to those who died in all major wars, including World War II, The Vietnam War, The Korean War, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.”
Freshman Cayden Gusho said, “I spent time outside, and rode my ATV’s around town with my family even though it rained. I also watched the Brewers game which was fun.”
