Earth day takes place annually on April 22nd. This year, Arrowhead’s Earth Club hosted events each day during the week prior to Earth day.
According to the Arrowhead website, “Arrowhead Earth Club is a fun extracurricular focused on promoting environmental awareness and sustainability.”
According to the morning announcements, on Monday, April 15th, the club encouraged students and staff to wear green. On Tuesday, students and staff were encouraged to bring old electronics to recycle. On Wednesday, the club hosted a hike and a picnic at Centennial Park. On Thursday, old jeans could be recycled in the entryways at both campuses. On Friday, April 19th, Earth club gave away oak trees at South Campus.
The last event took place on Earth day, Monday, April 22nd. On this day, Earth club gave away succulent plants to anyone who signed up for one in both the North and South Campus libraries.
“The events were very successful. [I watched] teachers, students, and community members walk away with trees and new plants to watch grow. I think this fosters awareness of Earth Day and an ability for people to come together and plant trees,” says Earth Club President Shira Gui.
About 500 new trees were planted, according to Gui.
Earth Club has hosted similar Earth day events in the past.
“Last year, we gave away the same amount of trees and succulents and hosted a campus cleanup,” says Gui.
According to the Arrowhead website, some other events the Earth Club has hosted in the past are the Homecoming Parade clean-up, volunteering at the Hartland Marsh, and a roadside clean-up along Highway 16.
Earth Club also hosts club events throughout the year.
“Earth Club members go on hikes while enjoying nature. Also, E-cycle bins are available at either campus where anyone can drop off devices with rechargeable batteries in them,” says Gui.
