Simons Places 7th at State

Arrowhead High School has sent the boys Cross Country team to the state meet every year for the past four years. The team won the title back to back in 2010 and 2011, and finishing fourth in 2012.

Stevens Point took the win this year. Even though the team may have not won, AHS had a top 10  finisher by the name of Will Simons, who took seventh this past weekend. Rounding out his third year of high school cross country, Simons  lead our team to a 12th place finish at the state meet. The second runner for Arrowhead was Senior Jack Dambeck, who placed 102nd.

Head Coach Mike Mulrooney says: “We had been in a slump for a long time this season and finishing 12th was a bit of redemption. I know a lot of teams had written RIP to our season. We beat Muskego after having lost to them four times this year. Will Simons ran a very tough and smart race in finishing seventh, which puts him on the All State team. He will come into next season as the third-fastest returning runner in the state.”

Last year, Will Simons finished 52nd place with a time of 16:38 on the same course. This year, his time was 16:09. Entering his senior year, Simons is optimistic about his season and what lays beyond high school. Collegiate scouts are known to watch for seniors with talent similar to Simons.

Simons has run under the instruction of Coach Mulrooney for his entire high school career. Mulrooney is a renowned coach with many titles under his belt.

The Arrowhead website has the following to say about Mulrooney: “He’s been at Arrowhead for more than 30 years and inspired countless number of runners, turning the AHS cross country program into a state powerhouse. His teams have accumulated the following honors: 22 State qualifying teams, 14 top four finishes, four state champions, five state runner up titles and the 2011 team finished 8th at the Nike National CC Meet.”

Simons comes from a family of runners. His older brother John Simons had a very successful running career at Arrowhead and currently runs for the University of Minnesota.
