The AHS first annual Art Show was held in the North Campus cafeteria on May 22nd, 2018.

This year, AHS held its first ever Art Show: A Celebration of Visual Arts on May 22nd, from 6pm-8pm in the North Campus entrance and foyer area. People interested could have come and visited between 6pm-7pm with a ceremony at 7pm.

Freshman Erin Rivard was nominated by her teacher and was surprised that she was given this opportunity, because “my art was good but I’m still not sure why I was chosen.”

Teachers decided what art was in the show by four categories, according to art teacher Sherry Moseler.

“The categories are: the elements and principles of design, composition and arrangement within the space of the artwork, skill and technical ability and lastly the ability to communicate effectively with the viewer,” says Moseler.

Any student can me chosen by their art teacher to be a part of the AHS Art Show. Moseler says, the goal of the teachers, when picking the students work, is to get all levels of art represented in the show to depict the growth from students at the beginning level, to the most advanced.

In the end the show is judged like any other art show with the art teachers having the final say in the results, Moseler says. Even though the students received no cash or  big prizes for winning, they get school wide recognition and “indirectly all students taking art make an impact by representing the school in the individual classes they take.”

Six students received “Best of the Show,” and five students received purchase awards: Superintendent Award, Principal Award, Director of Learning Award, Director of Technology Award, and Visual Art Award.

Moseler said her favorite part of the show is “watching others view the show, especially students who understand what awe and wonder are at the moment they see something that completely inspires them and brings them joy.”

But with everything, there is always something to improve and Moseler hopes to continue to improve the art show, and is really exciting to see where it goes and grows, this being it’s first year.
