Varsity Field Hockey Earns State Runner Up

The Arrowhead girls Varsity field hockey team lost the state final at Hart Park in Wauwatosa saturday, October 18. The final score was 3-2 against USM.

Every Division one team and the two top division two teams square off for the title. The Arrowhead team had to beat two teams to get to the final. They beat ULS 10-0 and DSHA 3-0 . Then they met the matchup of University School Milwaukee or USM.

Their season has been going on since tryouts started back in August. Eighteen girls made the varsity team including four seniors, nine juniors, four sophomores, and 1 freshman.

This was the second year in a row Arrowhead met USM. The first matchup was last year with a 2-1 win in strokes or a penalty shootout.

This year, however, the Arrowhead team thought they started off slow, “I think we started off really nervous and we gave up the ball a lot. But then through the first half we started getting our groove back. By halftime we were trying just to focus on our basics and pass well. And have fun of course.” Junior Abby Myers said.

USM went up 3-0 by halftime. But the Arrowhead team fought back to make it a close game with goals from freshman MaryClare Banholzer and junior Brianna Buehler in the second half. But that wasn’t enough to pull back from a deficit.

For some of the seniors this was the last game they would play. A few let their emotions go. “Many started crying but most were happy with the way they played and happy about how fun the season was.” Myers said.

Junior Sarah Hahn said this, “In the past two years, Arrowhead has had success with field hockey, and we can only hope to see the same production next year.”
