Arrowhead Students Are Pleased with The Oscars

On February 26, 2014, the 84th annual Oscars Award Ceremony took place at the Hollywood Highland Center Theatre. Ellen Degeneres hosted it and Arrowhead students and staff such as North Campus librarian Therese Rodeghier, Junior Kara Vana, and Junior Alyssa Recknagel express their opinions on this years Oscars ceremony.

Rodeghier says she has no interest in the Oscars or watching them.

“I don’t ever watch the Oscars. All of the movies that are nominated are ones I have never seen because I never get a chance to see them,” says Rodeghier.

Recknagel says she watches the Oscars every year and she looks forward to it because it’s one of her favorite award ceremonies.

“I love watching the Oscars. I literally wait for it every year. The Oscars is the only ceremony worth watching because it involves adults and is classy unlike other ceremonies like the MTV Music Awards that has trashy performances,” says Recknagel.

Vana said she wished “The Great Gatsby” would have won Best Picture instead of “12 Years a Slave.”

“Gatsby was so much more fun and interesting than ‘12 Years a Slave.’ Don’t get me wrong, that was a beautiful movie, but I just loved ‘The Great Gatsby,’” says Vana.

Vana’s favorite actor, Leonardo Dicaprio, attended the Oscars but didn’t receive any awards.

“Leo has literally been in some of the most popular movies, but he has never won an Oscar. Poor Leo,” says Vana.

On the other hand, Recknagel’s favorite actor, Jared Leto won an Oscar and gave a speech that made her cry.

“His speech literally made me cry because of how beautiful it was,” says Recknagel.

Artists such as Pharrell Williams, Karen O, U2, Pink, Bette Midler, Idina Menzel, and Jamie Foxx performed at this year’s Oscars ceremony. Vana says Pharrell’s performance was her favorite because he made the song “Happy” fun to listen to and made the show fun to watch.

Recknagel says her favorite performance was Pink’s tribute to Judy Garland in a “Wizard of Oz” theme.

“Pink’s dress was so beautiful, the stage was beautiful, and her voice was beautiful. Her performance made me speechless,” says Recknagel.
