Should Arrowhead have an Open Campus?

Arrowhead High School should allow its students to have the freedom of an open campus.  Students should be able to leave school and come back during study halls, or go out during lunch hours.

Arrowhead doesn’t have the freshest or the most delicious food in Hartland.  Some students don’t want to eat what Arrowhead offers and some don’t want to eat what they can bring from home.

An open campus can solve this issue.  If students were allowed to leave campus during lunch hours, they could eat where and what they wanted.  Obviously, with the amount of time given for lunch, the students won’t be able to drive or walk far to get a bite.   But there are some places to eat which will help the students with cravings. Examples of place to eat are Sweet Dreams, Cousins Subs, Kings Wok, McDonalds, Hartland Cafe, and many more.  With the 42 minute lunch period, students have enough time to go, eat, and come back before their next class.  An open campus is a great idea.

Positive things that would come from this open campus rule is that small businesses in Hartland would see a large increase in business during the day.  Arrowhead can give back to these small businesses by allowing the students to visit them during lunch hours.

A concern for allowing an open campus during lunch hours is that students might come back late.  If they would, the tardy rule, and Saturday detentions, would fall in place.  There is always enough room for space in the detention room on Saturday.

Many students have a period in the middle of the day lasting several hours, with a combination of back to back study halls and/or lunch. This time could be spent either sitting in a desk at school or it could be spent in a productive manner. Student athletes could get a mid-day workout in, or go home and eat a healthier lunch than that which is offered in the cafeteria. Students could go home and take a nap, or let their dog out.

This is a great way for the students to have a bit more freedom and more choices to enjoy themselves during lunches and study halls.  Open campus should be allowed and will more than satisfy the student body.
