AHS Basketball Teams Holds Sock Drive For Milwaukee Homeless

During the Dec 14 AHS boys basketball game, there will be a sock drive with the goal of 30,000 sock donations organized by the donors, the Hower family.

The Hower family chose the basketball team to partner with because they currently have two sons in the basketball program.

In the pamphlet available to students and staff, it is stated that besides shelter, socks are in top priority for the population currently living on the streets.

Wool socks are specifically requested, to keep people warm during cold winters.

Men’s socks are in higher demand (large/extra large), however, they still accept women’s and children’s socks.

It is also expressed in the pamphlet that the homeless rarely take their shoes off, therefore, it would be greatly appreciated if they acquired socks to accompany their shoes.

There are two available options to donate, at the game or sent through the mail to the Hower family at:

5420 N Paulines Wood Drive; Nashotah, WI 53058

Years ago, at a holiday meal, the Hower family witnessed a brawl between two homeless men over a pair of socks. This sparked them to take it upon themselves to collect socks.

The Hower family partnered up with Arrowhead’s basketball team for several years now.

Eventually, the socks will be sent to the Salvation Army.

Independent Senior Executive Director Neely Basich, the individual overseeing the project, predicts to see 1,000 donations due to the fact that a year ago 700 donations were sold considering there were no fans since social distancing was being enforced.

Prior to the event, Basich has one message: “We hope lots of people from the community will attend our home game on Dec. 14th and bring a pair or two of wool socks!”
