Preparation for Forensics Season Begins

On Friday, September 24, returning forensics members, and coaches Angela Rodenkirch and Rayen Elmergreen, gathered to discuss the start of the 2021-2022 season. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss methods of recruitment and discuss the leadership opportunities for this year including captain and manager positions, which are available to juniors and seniors.

Last year, for the 2020-2021 forensics season, meets were held virtually. This year, they will be in person with some mask requirements. Returning member and junior Onesti Elkhoms says her “favorite thing about forensics is being able to travel to meets as a team.” However, virtual contests will continue to be offered to schools that are maintaining strict public health protocols or unable to travel for any other reason.

In the 2019-2020 season, the Arrowhead meet was cancelled due to the spread of COVID-19. This year, Arrowhead will be hosting the first meet of the season on January 15.

Thursday, October 14th marks the scheduled date for the first full team meaning—meaning those who have yet to participate in a past season are welcome (and encouraged by coaches and returning members) to attend if they plan on being a part of the team.  In an email to recurring members, coach Rayen Elmergreen states that she wants “posters to be hung and announcements to start next monday,” October 4.

Rodenkirch and Elmergreen suggest that team t-shirt designs be submitted by this October 14 meeting.

Every year, the Moments in History, Special Occasion, and Storytelling category topics change. This year, a Moments in History speech must cover an event from 500 BCE to 1 CE or 1980-1989. A special occasion speech must be written about one of four topics: a press conference about a public health issue, a roast of a celebrity or a fictional character, a speech to present a posthumous award or honor, or an anniversary speech to commemorate an event at a school. For the storytelling category, stories must be about science and/or exploration, resilience, or nature and/or weather.
