Arrowhead Seniors Prepare for College with Applications and Roommate Surfing

These colleges, UWM, and UWW, have banners located in the back of Ms. Carnell’s classroom at North Campus.

Early admissions for UW applications were due on November 1st, 2016—but, you can still apply. The acceptance rates for colleges in Wisconsin are beginning to rise, with the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee at an average of 89.6%, University of Wisconsin Whitewater at an average of 81.8%, and the University of Wisconsin Stout at an average of 90.8%. These statistics show that above 80% of students are accepted to these UW colleges.

Hoping to attend Bradley University in Illinois in the fall of 2017 is senior Erin Walmer. The acceptance rate at Bradley University is 63.4%.

Walmer says she has been accepted to Bradley University, University of Minnesota-Rochester (acceptance rate of 37.6%), and Carroll University (80.8% acceptance rate). In preparation for Bradley, Walmer says she “will continue to keep my grades up so it will be easier for me to keep my grades up in college.”

She says she is “currently trying to figure out where I want to go and also trying to apply and write scholarships.”

Walmer is using Facebook to find herself a roommate for the following 2017 fall semester.

Walmer says she is “nervous to be in a new environment and meet new people. I’m also nervous for my studies because I’m required to keep a certain GPA to stay in the nursing program I hope to be in.”

Walmer also says, “I’m trying hard to get good grades this year, but the senioritis is making it extremely hard.”

Attending the University of Wisconsin Stout in the fall of 2017, is senior Jenna Nyhouse. Nyhouse got scouted by the UW Stout softball coach. Softball at UW Stout is Division 3, and there is a total of 9,356 students at the university.

Nyhouse says, “I am doing my best to try to be independent with my studies and other parts of my life so the transition from home to college life will be much easier. I also studied very hard for my ACT in order to boost my score, which was successful.”

In order to find a roomate, Nyhouse is actively searching Roomsurf.com and using Facbook.

Nyhouse says that the most nerve-wracking thing about making decisions on her future is that she is “nervous to be away from everybody I know. I am also nervous that I will fall behind in my studies because of varsity athletics and traveling.”

She says she plans on living on campus at Stout, and being a part of their softball team.

In comparison to Walmer, Nyhouse says “senioritis, for me, kicked in before senior year even started. I’m so ready to get out of high school and start off my future.”

Hoping to attend the University of Wisconsin Madison in the fall of 2017 is senior Samantha Heinitz. The acceptance rate of this university is 49.2%. Compared to Stout which has a total of 9,356 students, UW Madison has a total of 43,193 students. That is quadruple the amount of students at  UW Madison than UW Stout. Heinitz says she is “nervous, but excited to see what her future has to offer.”

“Meeting new people will be great. Arrowhead didn’t always have the best of crowds, so I am looking forward to going to Madison and meeting the new people there,” she says.

There is not a set date for roommate selection; deadlines are dependent upon the college you are attending. College application deadlines also vary based upon the college you plan on attending.
