Varsity Field Hockey Team Motivated By First Loss
Arrowhead High School’s Varsity Field Hockey team started with a 5 and 0 winning streak.
As the season went on, they “Grew too much confidence,” says sophomore forward, Sarah Hahn.
Their next game is on Wednesday, September 18, at 5:15pm against USM at USM.
“At the next game we plan to win! USM is are arch rival and one of our main goals is to beat them,” says Hahn.
Hahn said, “Our team began to struggle because we went into a game thinking we were going to win and some of us weren’t trying our hardest. This loss will help us in the future.”
Because of this, Hahn says her teammates plan to do all they can to be sure that they make it to state.
Junior Riley Knapek said, “Our goal for the season is to make it to state and beat our rivals, USM.”
The team practices every day of the week for two hours. During the two hours, they run 1.6 miles, run lots of drills, and scrimmage.
Due to their loss, Hahn says, “I expect practice to get more intense now because I would hate to have to lose another game due to lack of hard work.”
To be sure that they don’t lose again Knapek, says they need to work on, “passing as a team and short corners.”
This year has been different from last year, especially for Hahn.
Hahn said, “Going from JV to varsity is much different. On varsity, the team is very close and everything is taken more seriously, which makes me work harder and strive to be a better player.”
The team lost last year’s captain, Carly Brengosz, to graduation.
“[She’s], who’s now playing D2 field hockey at Lindenwood. She was one of our top scorers and she played center forward,” said Knapek.
Overall, this year’s Varsity Field Hockey team plans to step up their game, score more goals, work harder at practice, and work together as a team to ensure that they reach their final goal, making it to state, Hahn says.
