Acrylic, Gel and Shellac Nails at Arrowhead

Senior Alexis Komondoros shows off her bright blue Gel nails

Recently, there has been a huge trend of Gel, Shellac and Acrylic nails on the hands of teens at Arrowhead High School. There are different types of nails polishes that you can get on your nails. There is just the basic polish, which is your everyday nail polish and lasts a couple days.

Additionally, according to atelieremmanuel.com’s article, “Acrylic, Gel and Shellac Nails” Acrylics and Gels are fake nails placed over your natural ones. Both can be made to match the shape of the nail, or to extend it. So, when you want longer nails, you are asking for either acrylic or gel extensions. People also get acrylics and gels in order to have stronger nails, but, in the long term, they actually weaken your natural nail.

“I always choose acrylics for when I get my nails done. I know they may not be the best for your nails, but for special occasions, they just look so nice and especially because I naturally have short nails, so getting to expand them a little changes the whole look of my hands overall,” says senior Halle Berg.

So the decision is up to you on which you would like to get, but keep in mind that acrylic may not be a great option for the health of your nails. Another option that’s not as harmful on your nails would by shellac nails, according to atelieremmanuel.com, becuase they don’t weaken your nails as much as acrylic nails do.

According to atelieremmanuel.com, shellac is a blend of gel and nail polish. Because it is like a polish, it can’t be used to extend your nail. Because it is like a gel, however, it does add strength and durability. The article continued to explain that in the long term, shellac is much less damaging to nails than traditional gels or acrylics. The main benefit of shellac is that it reduces chipping.

“Personally, I love shellac nails. They’re safer than acrylic and gel, which in the past wore down my nails, and they looks so cool. Mine last two weeks normally so after I just go in again, they take off the shellac polish and I can pick a new color and my nails look fresh and clean,” says senior Andrea Eckl.

Arrowhead High School students say they stop at ENails, located in Hartland, to get their nails done. Princes for a normal nail polish change is $15, shellac is $30, and acrylics are $35

According to refinery29.com’s article, “The Top 2016 Nail-Color Trends To Try Right Now” some nail polish trends have included a dark, glittery navy hue; warm, opaque beige;  charcoal gray and seafoam green.

“Oh yeah, definitely the green color and the gray I would say have been big around school. Me and my friends are more into neutral colors like the grey color, but when it gets into summer we like to pull out that green color or a sky blue,” says junior Haley Kalal.

Refinery29.com also states that celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Demi Lovato, Rooney Mara, and Rosie Huntington Whiteley have all been spotted rocking these nail colors on the red carpets.
