Christmas Tunes Are On The Way

December’s Christmas tunes are coming up on quick. These holiday songs are seen as one of the best ways to get into the holiday spirit and celebrate tradition.  Some of the most popular holiday songs according to http://top40.about.com/od/holidaymusic/tp/Top-100-Christmas-Songs.htm are “The Christmas Song,” by Nat King Cole; “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” by Judy Garland; “O Holy Night,” by Celine Dione; “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” by Bruce Springsteen; and “Jingle Bell Rock,” by Billy Idol.

Eryn Hartnett, a senior at Arrowhead, says, “My favorite song is ‘Blue Christmas,’ by Elvis. I grew up listening to it around Christmas time with my grandma while we would put up decorations. She loves Elvis and was able to pass that onto me.”

Erika Lund, a senior at Arrowhead says, “My favorite song is probably ‘All I Want for Christmas is You,’  by Mariah Carey. I always want to cuddle up by the fireplace with some hot cocoa with snow outside and sing along to that song. I also really like the song ‘The Little Drummer Boy,’ by Bing Cosby and David Bowie. That’s a classic.”

Christmas tunes flood the radio stations sometimes even before Thanksgiving. Two Milwaukee area radio stations that solely play Christmas music around this time of the year are 95.7 and 97.7. Another popular place to find Christmas songs would be apps like Pandora, Spotify, or Soundcloud.

Hartnett says, “I refuse to listen to Christmas music until December first. After that it is perfectly acceptable and enjoyable.”

Lund says, “I listen to 95.7 a lot during the holiday season. They have a nice combination of old-school Christmas music and then some of the newer, more pop-like versions. It’s always fun to sing along in the car with it on.”

Another way to enjoy Christmas music is to go caroling around your neighborhood.

Hartnett says, “I’ve never been caroling but I’m not opposed to it. I know a few family members and friends who have done it previous years so who knows…Maybe I’ll go this year.”

Lund says, “I went caroling with my middle school choir for three years. We went all around Milwaukee to different hotels and the mall and it was a really fun experience. It made the holiday spirit even more real and I’d definitely go again with a big group of friends.”
