Arrowhead Students Reap Benefits From Extracurricular Activities
Many high schools in the U.S. offer extracurricular activities, such as music, academic clubs, and sports. At Arrowhead, there are over 65 extracurricular activities offered, according to the Arrowhead High School website.
After school activities offer opportunities for students to learn the values of teamwork, individual and group responsibility, physical strength and endurance, competition, diversity, and a sense of culture and community, according to the Institute Of Educational Science, a website that contains information about education.
“I’ve been involved in Student Senate for four years now and I wish I could continue with it after high school. It has taught me so much about responsibility and leadership. I’m definitely going to miss the experience,” says senior Emma Repka.
Over 36 clubs are offered at Arrowhead High School. From Best Buddies, to Earth Club to Robotics, there’s a wide variety of activities that students can get involved in. Students can see signs around the school or hear announcements over the intercom giving information including start dates and where to meet.
“I wish more students at our schools would participate in more extracurricular activities. You learn so much and can take so many valuable things out of them,” says senior Maddie Hemmer.
“I think the benefits of students taking extracurricular activities is great. There are even statistics that show after school activities being extremely helpful not only for school purposes but outside of your school and in your personal life as well,” says Arrowhead’s new associate principal Becky Gordon.
According to the Institute Of Educational Science, participation in extracurricular activities may increase students’ engagement or attachment to their school, and thereby decrease the likelihood of school failure and dropping out.
As well as many clubs, Arrowhead offers 29 sports. There are sports from football, baseball, and basketball, to golf, field hockey, and to Alpine ski team. Arrowhead also offers intramural sports ranging from basketball to dodgeball. The Arrowhead website says to keep a look out for posters and announcements with information on intramural sports.
“Sports are what makes me a well rounded individual. They have taught me so much about teamwork and hard work. I’ve learned to be a leader when needed and to put in effort when I really want something. Students should really get more involved because the benefits that come out of sports and clubs as well, is just amazing,” says senior and AHS varsity lacrosse player Alli Kroeninger.
“I have met almost all my friends through sports, and football specifically. I’ve made such strong relationships and life long friends. Without playing, I would have never met some of my best friends,” says senior and varsity football player Derek Wnuk.
According to the Arrowhead website, there are 29 sports and 36 clubs at Arrowhead High School – so you are bound to find one that fits you best. Get involved!
