Arrowhead Track Season Begins
Both the boys and girls 2014 track season began on March 10, 2014. Practice is from Monday to Friday and begins at 3:00pm and goes until approximately 5:00pm. With this upcoming season comes many changes.
In this non-cut sport, the girls track team has recently lost their head coach, Steve Kostka, who had to resign last minute due to a family emergency.
Miranda Winkleman, a senior track runner at Arrowhead, says, “I’m going to miss Kostka a lot, but the new staff are pretty cool, too.”
Curt Kaczor, who used be the head distance coach, stepped up to fill the place as the new head coach.
Kaczor says, “I definitely look forward to watching the new runners improve every single meet. I also really enjoy watching my upper classmen become leaders through example, while setting the standard for the entire team and coming through in the clutch. I am very excited to see the overall success of the team.”
The other changes of the girls team consists of trying to find a new pole vault coach, since the previous coach, Chris Adrian, was unable to coach this season. Kaczor is also trying to find a new assistant sprints coach.
As for the boys track team, Chris Herriot is returning as the head coach and head sprints coach. The rest of the boys coaches have stayed the same except for Peter Kishline, an assistant sprint coach, who resigned to take another job as a football coach at UW-Whitewater. With these minor changes, not many of the boy runners were impacted.
Jordan Argue, a junior track runner at Arrowhead, says, “I wasn’t affected by the coaching changes this season.”
While the main part of track and field consists of running, other aspects also draw in the students to participate.
Maggie Dawes, a senior runner at Arrowhead, says, “I like working out in a group because it is easier and presents more motivation to excel.”
Along with that, throughout the season, the runners are likely to build bonds with both the coaches and their fellow teammates.
Winkleman says, “My favorite part of track is the fun people to be around, while simultaneously getting a good workout.”
For the 2014 season, the girls track team’s goal is to participate and improve throughout the season. The ultimate accomplishment the coaches and runners are working for is placing at the state meet this June 6 and 7 at UW-Lacrosse.
The boys’ team also has ambitious goals to work for in the upcoming spring season. In the 2013 State meet, girls placed sixth overall, while the boys placed twenty sixth overall.
Argue, says, “Winning conference is my biggest objective for this spring.”
The first boys and girls junior varsity meets are one March 21, 2014, at either Watertown or UW-Parkside. Along with that, both of the boys and girls first varsity meet is on March 22, 2014 at UW-Parkside.
