“The Purge” Proves Disturbing

Crime rates are constantly trying to be decreased in the United States. The movie “The Purge” came up with a disturbing idea of how to do this. “The Purge” is directed by James DeMonaco and it came out on June 7, 2013.  This movie keeps the viewers on the edge of their seats. The plot is suspenseful yet creepy and twisted. “The Purge” takes place in the future. Purge day is one day per year where Americans can commit any crime they want.

“The Purge” is disturbing. Characters kill neighbors or loved ones without hesitation. Purge night is designed to decrease crime rates in the United States allowing for everyone to get their anger out within those 24 hours. The movie focuses in on one family and their adventures during Purge night.

The movie takes place during the year of 2022 in the rich suburbs of the United States. James Sandin (Ethan Hawke) is a very wealthy man who made a fortune on home security systems. Instead of taking a part in the purge night, the Sandin’s go on a lock down. Steel gates and barriers cover all windows and doors turning the Sandin house into a house sized vault.

Charlie (Max Burkholder) is the quiet, reserved son of the Sandins. Charlie, not knowing any better, opens the gates of their home for an un-named fugitive (Edwin Hodge) who then hides in the Sandin’s home. The fugitive is wounded and helpless and chased by a group of psycho, rich kids who are looking to ‘purge.’ The leader of this group (Rhys Wakefield) wears mask with a weary smile and a blonde wig giving him a none approachable, creepy appearance.

Wakefield’s character gives the Sandins a choice: sacrifice the fugitive to save his family, or be attacked and most likely killed. This conflict and decision causes the Sandins to evaluate their morals. Release an innocent man to be slaughtered or fight for all of their lives.

“The Purge” has an intriguing, original plot that draws the attention of many different types of audiences. Although the ending is somewhat disappointing, it is well worth watching and enjoying.
