Mean Girls Celebrates Nine Year Anniversary

Last week on October 3rd, the movie Mean Girls celebrated it’s nine year anniversary. This day is typically celebrated by young adults ages 12 to 20 and fans of the movie.

To celebrate the Mean Girls anniversary, Kendall Bennett, a sophomore at AHS says, “I made a Tweet celebrating and [joking] with friends with the best lines in the movie, throughout the day.”

On October 3rd, kids in the hallways of AHS quoted their favorite lines.

Bennett says, “My favorite line is when a boy in class asks Janice her what her wig is made of and she replies ‘your mom’s chest hair.’”

Mean Girls has sold over a million copies in the past nine years and is still selling copies everyday.

The plot of the movie demonstrates how a typical teenager girl can go from sweet, innocent and well-liked, to self-absorbed and a popularity-driven monster.

Sophomore Julia Pjevach says, “Mean Girls is relatable because it is the typical high school scene. It shows how easily popularity can change things. The movie has taught me to stay true to myself and popularity is a concept created to belittle others and is not something we should strive to be.”

Throughout the movie, humor is used to lighten the realities of the teenage situation.

Bennett says, “The first time I watched it was in the seventh grade with my grandma… I was scarred but the movie was and is awesome.”

Pjevach says, “The first time I watched Mean Girls was in sixth grade. I remember laughing a lot, but I did not understand the majority of the humor I enjoy today.”

Mean Girls was a box office success making $129,042,871 worldwide. In fact, in its opening weekend, the film grossed $24,432,195 in 2,839 theaters in the United States.

Because of this, Pjevach says, “Yes, I think our generation has been impacted by this movie, because the younger the viewers are the more likely they think this behavior is acceptable. However, it may be humorous to watch [but]  it is not necessarily something to be promoting, in my opinion.”
