Arrowhead girls tennis gets ready for practice at their home courts

The Arrowhead girls tennis team takes on Kettle Moraine High School on Monday, september 18th. The matches start at 4:00 on Monday at Arrowhead.

The Warhawks look to increase their W’s in the win column as they sit at 18-11. The Kettle Moraine Lasers are 19-23, but are still a threat to cause an upset  as every match on this upcoming Monday has a meaning.

Senior Maddie Shipshock is 15-9 and will take on Grace Sueflohn of Kettle Moraine at 1 singles who is 11-12 on the year.

Another big matchup in the upcoming matches, is senior Meaghan Esser (16-9) and Grace Cady (17-8) going up against Paige Freeman (9-14) and her partner Taylor Meeth (9-14) at the 1 doubles spot.

With a win against Kettle Moraine, the girls look to make a run at the conference title which will occur the weekend after the matchup against Kettle Moraine. This win would put the Warhawks at an advantage for Conference, which is located in waukesha, by possibly getting them a higher seed for the tournament depending how other teams do.

Arrowhead will also appear in the sub sectionals where they have the chance at moving on to sectionals mid november at Nielsen tennis complex in Madison. If the team gets on a roll, the next stop after sectionals would be a state appearance, where the top 12 teams will face off in the state championship tournament to determine the best tennis team in the state.

“I’m excited to see how the girls do down the stretch not only this week but for the conference tournament,” Jacob Johnson, a student at Arrowhead, said. Also, Senior tennis player at Arrowhead, Meaghan Esser described the game as a possible slip up game “It is a match that we should win but we can’t overlook. We just have to play our game and hopefully it will end up in our favor.” Coaches this year are Coach Trimble and coach Ziegler-Fritz. Coach Ziegler-Fritz coaches boys JV tennis and Coach Trimble helps out with the Boys Varsity tennis with mostly doubles teams. Coach Trimble is hungry to get back to another state appearance as his boys varsity team got there last year. What the coaches love most about the team is that their team is so deep with good players. It is so important to have good singles teams as the team wins by having 4 or more wins in total, and there are 4 total singles teams. Even if all the singles teams win and all of the doubles lose, Arrowhead will ultimately get the victory. That’s why a strong singles lineup is a great attribute to have. After the season is over, Number 1 singles and 1 doubles are very likely to show up in the individual state tournament, where the top 72 of the best players in the state of both singles and doubles square off to see which player or partners are the best in the state. Yet before that, the team still has much of the season to go through. After this upcoming week, they have the conference tournament, and regardless to what happens in that, they will have a shot to move on from sub sectionals, which will occur 1 week after conference. In sub sectionals, they will have 8 teams to go through. Each flight (3 singles, 2 doubles etc.) will have their own small tournament. Each win is a point for the first round, and each win for the second round is 2 points. The team with the most overall points in each sub sectional, moves on to the sectional tournament. However, if any flight loses at any time, they are eliminated for the sectionals tournament. So it is very important that the girls get as many wins as possible so that they have more eligible players for the next round which is sectionals. If they successfully move on, Sectionals is a little bit different. It does not matter if one player loses a match, they are not eliminated, they play 2 games no matter what. The team will advance if they score the most points out of all of the sectionals teams. If your team advances, they head to the state tournament where the best 12 teams battle it out for the state title. The one thing about state, however, is that if they lose in any of the other rounds, the lineups are reset in the state tournament, so every team has all 7 flights still left.
