Arrowhead Students Celebrate Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a national holiday celebrating those who served in the military, and were killed in action. Memorial Day is celebrated every last Monday of May and is practiced throughout the states.

At Arrowhead, students celebrate Memorial Day by taking off school on the day of, giving us a four day weekend. Many students at Arrowhead use the day off to help them with academics, and to help them celebrate and remember the veterans who served.

Avan Prange, a sophomore at Arrowhead says, “My great-grandpa passed away in World War II, and me and my family visited his hometown over memorial day weekend.”

Max Quadracci, a sophomore at Arrowhead says, “I stayed home all day and did homework then went boating with some friends. We went out to eat at the Kiltie too, and they had American flags in all of their stuff.”

According to America’s Library, Memorial Day became a holiday after World War I, in 1971 when it was declared a national holiday by congress. Although it wasn’t an official holiday until 1971, the first Memorial Day was celebrated in 1868, and May 30th was chosen as the date.

According to USInspect, most common traditions celebrated on Memorial Day are: attending a parade, wear red, white and blue, decorate various items with flags/stars, and to buy a poppy, which is a red flower that signifies military death.

In Hartland, citizens celebrated Memorial Day by attending the parade. The parade was hosted in the Village of Hartland, and took place May 29 at Noon.
