Striving For Another Good Year

Arrowhead Boys Cross Country team started off their 2013 season on August 19th.

The Arrowhead Boy’s Cross Country Team runs for two hours a day, six days a week.   Seniors, Andy Foy, John Widish, and Sam Sellner all agree that this year will be difficult but will be worth the effort.

Foy says, “We are working harder than ever to recover from last year’s losses of six varsity runners.”

Senior, Sam Sellner says, “We lost some strong people so we have to train harder if we want to get there.”

With the graduation of six of their seven state runners, the team’s practices have “Gotten a lot more difficult, paces have increased and the workouts have gotten a lot harder,” Foy says.

Widish says, “The practices are more difficult because of more hill runs, laps, workouts, etc.”

The team not only runs in the afternoon but they also run in the mornings on their own time.

Foy says, “There will be a challenge because of the drop in talent but we are hard workers.  We are one of the hardest working teams in the state.”

Before the school year started, the runners ran in their free time to improve their times during the season.  Last summer, Widish says he averaged 50 miles a week, running for 50-60 minutes a day, for six days a week.

Widish says, “We’ve made the necessary adjustments to our training to prepare and excel this season.”

The Cross Country team’s season kicked off the 2013 season with a Quad, the West Allis Hale Invite, and the Arrowhead Invitational.

The season continues until October 19th which is the Classic 8 Conference meet at Nagawaukee Park.  If the Varsity team makes it to the State Championship in Wisconsin Rapids, they will continue running until November 2nd.
