Downtown Delafield Construction

Downtown Delafield Construction

Construction in Downtown Delafield began in May of  2016 for sidewalks along the west side of Genesee Street which will connect Mill Street to Church Street. Sidewalks will also be on on the east side of Genesee Street to connect Mill Street to the paths within St. Johns Park.

These streets lead to the downtown area of Delafield which include many stores, restaurants, and businesses.

To get from county road C to highway i 94  you must pass through Downtown Delafield. This means to access the highway from this direction one must pass through the construction area.

Only one lane has been able to be used. To allow heavy traffic through the town construction workers have directed traffic one lane at a time.

“Working at Chase bank in Downtown Delafield is a real pain these last couple months,”  says Nashotah resident Jennifer Kindrid. “I sat in traffic for 15 minutes the other day on my way to work.”

“With the only easy access from my house to the highway being a construction zone makes it really difficult for me to make my commute to work in Milwaukee every day,” says Nashotah resident Victor Jones.

On June 12th, 2016 portable stoplights were placed at each end of traffic. The stop lights allow traffic to pass through without a traffic director.

“I’m used to this route because I’ve been taking it for the past 15 years, so an extra few minutes waiting for the green light can seem like forever,” says Jones.

Downtown Delafield has been been a shopping destination since it’s construction began in 1988, according to visitdelafield.com.

“Sales seem to be the same as they were before the construction started,” says owner of Element style Carrie Rozac. “I think we are just grateful to have very faithful customers who come no matter what.”

Element Style is a well established boutique in Downtown Delafield located on Milwaukee Street.

“The construction hasn’t stopped me from coming into the store. I’ve been coming to the store for years and a few extra minutes won’t stop me,” says Element Style customer Elizabeth Siepmann.

Re-piping and an extension of a portion of the road has been completed. The concrete for the sidewalk has yet to be poured.

“It seems like this is going on forever. I don’t get why they cannot get his done any faster,” says local Brady Kerwin.

Extensive periods of traffic stops have lead many locals to become aggravated.

“One girl flipped me the middle finger the other day,” says construction worker Jim Hans. “ I shook my head as it’s not my fault she had to sit in traffic for an extra few minutes.”

Construction of the sidewalk in the downtown area is yet to be complete and has left many residents frustrated.
