Arrowhead senior Griffin Barnard began his college application process during the summer of 2014.  Barnard looked for colleges with a music and media production program.  He also looked into colleges with more broad music programs like audio tech.

“I was looking for schools that had not majors, but actual colleges dedicated to music production,” says Barnard.

Barnard applied to University of Denver, University of Minnesota Twin Cities, New York University, Ball State University and its school of music, Michigan Technical college, University of Columbia Chicago, and High Point University of North Carolina. Barnard said he applied to 30 other colleges, but that he’s forgotten many of the places he’s applied to. (HOW DO I END THIS, He forgot about 30 other college names he applied to)

Barnard has been accepted at Ball State University, but not to their college of music. He says he was also accepted at the University of Columbia in North Carolina.

“I hated having to fill out each and every application over and over, even if it was the same information,” says Barnard.

Barnard also said the real difficulty was not in the information, as it was plugging in basic information.  The difficulty, he said, came the many colleges he applied to each needing the same information.

“Name, address, parents name, Social Security number, phone number, after a while even the easy information is a pain,” says Barnard.

Barnard also says it was hard for him to keep in contact with every college he applied to.  Also, Barnard says procrastination was one of the most difficult hurdles.

“[Juniors] need to know that applying in itself is easy, but your mind works ways to make it seem like a pain, and then you procrastinate.  Even though you know it’s only gonna get done if you get your butt in gear,” says Barnard.

Barnard also says juniors should focus on a broad range of colleges to maximize options for a final decision.
