12 Arrowhead Students Published in The Skinny Poetry Journal
When first semester final exams were extended from 60 minutes to 90 minutes, Terri Carnell and Elizabeth Jorgensen, two of AHS’s teachers, decided to make their final exam skinny poetry.
The website Duatrope says, “Skinny poetry is an 11 line poem where the first and eleventh lines can be any length. The eleventh and last line must be repeated using the same words from the first and opening line. The second, sixth, and tenth lines must be identical. All the lines in this form, except for the first and last lines, must be composed of only one word.”
Carnell and Jorgensen showed students some examples of skinny poems and then asked their students to analyze them. Students then had time to write their own poems and share them with the class.
Carnell and Jorgensen then sent the poems the students wrote to The Skinny Poetry Journal.
Jorgensen says, “I was so delighted when the editor of the journal, Truth Thomas, selected so many of my students for publication.”
The students that were selected are now published authors and Jorgensen and Carnell both say they are so proud of them. The students that were published include:
Alex Brown
Em Hollern
Max Rebella
Brishanna Malysa
Caitlyn Klopp
Riley Rogers
Jorgensen says, “Congratulations to all of my published student authors!”
