Are the Club At AHS Too Overwhelming?
Arrowhead offers many clubs like Key Club, Best Buddies, and Earth Club, Spanish Club. But lots of these clubs are scheduled on the same day. Best Buddies and Student Senate are both at 2:20 pm on Wednesday. If you are in both clubs, you can’t be at two places at once.
“You have to stay organized with all the clubs you’re in and stay involved at the same time,” says Sadie Sarinske, a sophomore at Arrowhead, who is involved in Key Club and Best Buddies.
Many students at Arrowhead are also in sports, so they miss club meetings scheduled after school. Students then have to pick between sports and clubs. Some clubs and sports penalize you for missing. The Student Senate policy states that if you miss club meetings or don’t attend the club’s events, they will kick you out. The penalties of missing practice for lacrosse, field hockey, football, swim, and soccer result in having to miss playing time in games or in some cases miss the entire game.
“I’m not in as many clubs as I would like to be in because of sports. They get in the way and I can’t miss practice,” says Sarinske. Sarinske is also involved in field hockey, which doesn’t allow the players of the team to miss their practices.
The Key Club meetings are also scheduled on Thursdays at 2:40 pm which is all in the same week as Best Buddies and Student Senate. Clubs are also scheduled in the morning at 6:50, so students have an opportunity to attend the morning meeting if they have conflicts later in the day.
“I ride the bus to school in the morning because my parents work so I don’t have the opportunity to go to the morning meetings,” says Sarinske.
