AHS Hosts Book Drive and Fundraiser With Local Business

Arrowhead Book Club, in conjunction with local business Books & Company, hosted a virtual book fair from November 29 through December 13.

On The Books & Company website, are Ahs Student and teacher recommendations.

The books that were recommended are Firekeeper’s Daughter by Angeline Bouley, recommended by AHS English teacher Liz Mukwitz.

Ojibwe author Angeline Boulley describes Firekeeper’s Daughter as

“Indigenous Nancy Drew” and I couldn’t agree more! Readers of Daunis

Fontaine’s story will get a fascinating glimpse into the indigenous

communities of Sault Ste. Marie, hockey culture, tribal law, traditional and

natural medicine, and the Midwest methamphetamine circuit. This is a

powerhouse debut thriller that will captivate readers of various ages and

Backgrounds.

The Girl Who Lived: A Thrilling  Suspense Novel written by Christopher Greyson, was recommended by Arrowhead Senior Olivia Fladhammer.

I really enjoyed reading this book because there were so many different

interconnected pieces in this book. It took me 2 days to finish this book

because it was a pretty easy read. This book kept me really engaged and

had me switching between who I thought the actual killer was. This would

have been a full 5 out of 5 but there was a moment at the end that kind of

lost it for me but other than that I really enjoyed reading this book.

The Plot: A Novel by Jean Hanff Korelitz, was recommended by AHS English teacher Katie Hermann.

The story centers around the plight of Jacob Finch Bonner, a creative writing professor who feels he’s reaching the nadir of his career. When he’s suddenly presented with the opportunity to “steal” the brainchild of his private, misanthropic student once he learns of his premature death, he faces a moral dilemma. Certain that the inspiration of Evan Parker never came to fruition before he died, and confident that this is a story that needs to be told, via his own characters and conditions — and of course, entirely in his own words — Jacob convinces himself that his endeavor is justified, even admirable. After going on to enjoy the fame and accolades that come with having written the latest cultural phenomenon, Jacob’s world is surreptitiously shaken when he starts receiving Twitter messages from @TalentedTom (an apt allusion to The Talented Mr. Ripley), noting that Jacob is not the author. As the messages become more threatening and arrive more frequently, Jacob begins to panic as he searches for a solution and, along with the reader, gets caught off guard by a whammy of plot twists.

Defending Jacob: A Novel written by William Landay, was recommended by AHS Junior Shaylin Stemper.

I recommend this book to people who love murder mysteries and

suspense. I don’t typically like murder mysteries, but this is one of

the best books I have ever read. It has non-stop action, constant

twists, and will leave you on the edge of your seat. You will not

want to put it down.

Variant, written by Robison Wells, was recommended by AHS Sophomore Maggie Jahnke.

Variant by Robinson wells is a science fiction dystopian that is one of two

books in the Variant series. Wells describes Benson as a 17-year-old foster

kid who goes from home to home frequently. He struggles with friendships

and has wanted a new beginning for a while. This book will give an

intriguing look into Benson’s struggles and how this new opportunity he is

given will change him for better or worse. The dystopian thriller will make

young adult readers connect to the mind of Benson and leave each

chapter wanting more.
