Should There Still be Snowdays? – Elise Ove, Senior

Snowdays are a time-honored tradition for those of us who live in chilly climates. An unexpected day off? There’s nothing better. While many of us know that snow days are not the best for planning, virtual days due to snow would be more difficult to coordinate and take away so much of the fun from winter. If a student suddenly has to move online it might be difficult for them to get their schoolwork done. I know this from experience. Being quarantined and staying home from school are very similar.

Many younger students may not have their own devices to participate in virtual learning. It is always challenging to navigate the first day of online learning and a one-day vacation from school would be a nice mental break for students.  Kids have had football games, dances, extracurriculars, and more taken away from them. With all that’s going on in the world, do we really need to take another thing away from students? Also, without a pandemic, why would anyone opt out of a snow day? If you’ve ever seen a child flush ice cubes down a toilet or sleep with a spoon under their pillow you would know how much happiness they get from the possibility of a snow day. So many fond childhood memories evolve from snow days; from snowball fights to snowmen it brings joy. I personally remember learning how to snowboard down my neighbor’s hill in the freezing wind and running inside to warm up with some hot cocoa, I will cherish those memories forever. People love snow days; don’t take them away.
