AHS Homecoming: Not Exactly a Success

Homecoming for Arrowhead took place Saturday, October 7 in the North Campus west gym. The theme was “Beauty and the Beast” and music was by DJed by Midwest Sound. The doors opened at 7:30pm and the dance officially ended at 11:30pm.

Midwest Sound played many popular songs including “Rake it Up” by Yo Gotti and Mike WiLL Made-It, and “Fergalicious” by Fergie. Despite these being well-known songs, many students thought the music ruined the dance.

“I think the dance would have been a lot more fun if the music was better,” says AHS junior Nick Kemp. “I know the songs that were played, and they were good, but I wanted to hear my favorite songs. Arrowhead is super strict about ‘explicit’ music playing but we’re high schoolers and they should realize we’ve heard and use language that isn’t PG.”

AHS junior Zach McCluskey also says, “I didn’t even go the dance because the music is so terrible. It makes me feel like I’m in middle school again.”

Ms. Varsos, advisor of Student Senate, says, “Nothing with profanity or explicit lyrics can be played. Only clean versions of songs as it is a school sponsored event.”

“It probably could have been more fun if people actually danced,” says Kemp. “When my group got there, everyone was just standing around. It was so awkward that I left after 15 minutes.”

Kemp says, “I would have had so much more fun if the music was different. Change the music, and more people would be willing to come.”

The price of homecoming tickets was $15 with ticket sales run by Student Senate.

“I don’t think the tickets are worth the $15,” says AHS senior Robby Shattuck. “If anything they should be around $10. The decorations look good and everything but having to pay that much for a ticket, when all I’m getting out of it is standing in a smelly gym, is not worth it.”

The gym was decorated with paper teacups with the names of the couples attending the dance, along with disco lights from the DJ stand and on the ceiling.

“I don’t know if I will go to next year’s homecoming,” says Kemp. “Next year I’ll be a senior and I feel uncomfortable being around all those freshmen, especially considering the majority of the people that go to the dance are younger than me. I’ll for sure go to prom though, really looking forward to that. But yeah, homecoming was a disappointment like the past years once again.”

“I actually had fun at the dance,” says Shattuck. “Yes the music was lame and the gym is probably not the best place for a high school dance but I feel like if you’re with the right people, and you’re in the right mindset, you can have a good time anywhere. The people that are complaining are the ones that expect everything to be perfect. We’re in high school. I don’t know why they expect what they do, but they could probably have had a better time if they actually tried to have fun at school events.”
