Arrowhead High School officially ends the 2016-2017 school year on June 9th. Final exams are June 7th, 8th, and 9th. The last day of school for seniors is June 2nd. The academic days left at Arrowhead are dwindling with the Aspire tests for freshmen and sophomores taking up four days: May 15th, 16th, 22nd, 23rd. Arrowhead students also have off of school on May 29th for Memorial Day.

Many students, such as freshman Hunter Phillips, are starting to think about applying for a summer job.

“I think that having a summer job is really important for high schoolers because it teaches us to earn our own money and take responsibility for something. I also want a job because even though there is a lot of stuff to do in the summer it’s nice to have something to do where you can make money,” says Phillips.

Students such as sophomore Caroline Kroeninger kept a job throughout the school year and plan to continue working in the summer. Kroeninger works at Great Harvest Bread CO. in Delafield, WI, and she says she is contemplating interviewing for a second job. At her current job Kroeninger works around 10 hours a week.

“I absolutely love my job and I work as much as I can during the school year because I get money and I like the thought of working and earning money that is my own. I can get money from doing chores around the house but having a job makes me feel really mature. I am definitely going to try to pick up more shifts in the summer because I will have a lot more free time. I am interested in getting a second job because as of right now I only work Saturday’s and Sunday’s and I would like to have a job during the week as well,” says Kroeninger.

According to Phillips, many students want a job so that they can start saving for college. With only a few years left before college, students are starting to feel the pressure when it come to paying for college especially out of state schools, says Phillips.

“I put away half of every paycheck I get towards college funds and although that doesn’t seem like a lot, it adds up quickly and makes me feel more stable when it comes to preparing for college. I like to be ahead of the game so I started saving my freshman year and it will be very comforting my senior year when I actually start calculating prices,” says Kroeninger.

Phillips says that having a summer job also allows her to explore future career fields without feeling the pressure of school.

“Being able to focus on my future and make money without worrying about my grades or sports is something that really relaxes me. It’s hard to take on extracurriculars like having a job during the school year because it feels like there is always so much going on. I am definitely really excited to get a summer job,” says Phillips.
