In For The Long Haul…

2017 April Calender

Arrowhead students were in a temporary golden state as they were granted a four day weekend spanning from February 16th through February 20th. This break is traditionally referred to as the mid-winter break. To add to the privilege of not having school, the weather was a taste of summer with temperatures reaching upper 50’s and even lower 60’s.

However, with the glory of the four day weekend, comes the harsh reality that the next break most students will have will be spring break in April. The next break for the entire student body, isn’t until spring break. Spring break begins on Saturday, April 8 and carries out through Monday, April 17.

This excludes the senior class who will have off on Tuesday, February 28, and Wednesday, February 29, due to the junior class taking the ACT and work-keys testing.

For the juniors, this means the next week holds two half-days. However, these two half-days will both be spent on lengthy testing.

The mandatory ACT is to be held February 28, and is free to juniors. This ACT includes the writing portion. The ACT is mandatory as an attempt by the Wisconsin government to assist students in preparing for life after high school. The idea was introduced by state superintendent Tony Evers. Another advantage of this mandatory testing is that it trains school facilities how to administer the test, which allows for more testing centers in rural areas for students.

For freshmen and sophomores, no type of break will be given next week. Classes at South Campus will resume as normal. Any freshmen and sophomores enrolled in classes that take place at North Campus, will attend a study hall held in the South Campus cafeteria.

From February 23, there are 44 days until spring break.

Junior Jack Cieslak says, “It was almost a big slap in the face at the end of the four day weekend, knowing that that break was it until spring break.”

Cieslak says, “The harsh reality of school after any break is hard enough, but I think this one is harder because we know how long we have until our next break.”

Within the next six weeks before spring break, there are a few notable events occurring at Arrowhead. This includes the unfolding of the Arrowhead lacrosse season, with the first open practice being held on March 1st. Another spring sport is to begin during this long haul to spring break, boys golf has “open putt” on March 7th.

Senior Lauren Henzlik says, “It sucks for underclassmen, especially freshmen and sophomores because they don’t get any break whatsoever. But for seniors we still have two days off just next week so we aren’t too bummed about how far out spring break is. Not yet at least.”
