Fright Fest Takes Over Six Flags Great America

Arrowhead students, as well as people from all over the midwest, flock to Gurnee, Illinois, to attend Six Flags Great America’s halloween festival Fright Fest.

Fright Fest occurs on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from September 26 to November 1. This attraction focuses on the American tradition of Halloween and fear in the month of October. The festival consists of 36 haunted attractions.

Park admission is $34.50 when tickets are purchased online. To get into the separate haunted house attractions, wristbands can be purchased online for an additional $29.99. This can be purchased on its own or in addition to park admission (which allows for roller coaster admission).

The attractions featured at this year’s Fright Fest include a haunted house, and Manslaughter Manor, where groups are lead through a horror-themed mansion.

Another attraction at Fright Fest is Shipwreck of Horrors: Hurricane Harbor. This attraction is in the water park section of Six Flags Great America. The theme for this section of fright fest is the Bermuda Triangle. This features zombie sailors, dead ship captains, and human eating sea monsters.

According to the Six Flags Great America website, the park directors recommend only people thirteen years of age and older be present in the amusement park after dark.

The amusement park opens at 11:00 AM on Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. On Fridays, the park opens at 5:00 PM. Fright Fest does not begin until after sunset and continues until the park closes.

On Friday, October 16, October 23, and October 30, the park closes at 11:00 PM. On Saturday, October 17, October 24, and October 31, the park closes at midnight. On Sunday, October 18, October 25, and November 1 the park closes at 10:00 PM.

Customers who visit the park after dark can expect actors dressed as demons, zombies, and other bloody figures roaming the parks.

Many of the amusement park’s rides will be decorated and staffed as a Fright Fest attraction. The Viper coaster is titled Viper: Snakes on a train emphasizing the classic “Snakes on a plane” fear.

Another roller coaster featured in the fright fest attractions is Demon.

Solliday says, “I expect Fright Fest [this year] to be lots of fun, with lots of interesting/scary things to do.”

Arrowhead Sophomore Jordyn Gritzmacher says, “I’ve been to Fright Fest in the past, and it was one of those haunted october things that is terrifying, but hilarious at the same time.”

Gritzmacher says she “can’t wait” to attend this year’s Fright Fest.
