Spring Break At Arrowhead
Spring Break in America is one of the longest breaks during a school year at most public schools. According to studentcity.com, the top four spring break destinations are Cancun, Mexico; Panama City Beach, Florida; Nassau, Bahamas; and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Spring Break at AHS started on April 18th, 2014 and ended on Monday, April 28th, 2014. Spring break is a time for students and teachers to catch their breath from the hustle and bustle of weekly school.
Kendall Bennett, a sophomore at AHS, says, “This year for spring break I was lucky enough to travel to Belize City, Central America. This was the first time I had been to South America and would love to go back. Everything about Belize was beautiful. It was an eye opener to a new culture and I wish I could have gotten the chance to stay longer.”
AHS’ spring break is a ten day long vacation. Some students argue that spring break should be more extensive. Others argue that spring break is the perfect length or could even be shortened to extend summer break.
Cameron England, a sophomore at AHS says, “For spring break, I went to Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic. This trip was different from year’s past because a large group of friends of mine were there. During this vacation, I got the chance to bathe in the sun and grow relationships with some of the seniors who would be leaving within the year. Spring break gave me the perfect amount of time to be away from home, and the end of the school year is just around the corner. The next couple weeks will fly by and I can’t wait for a long summer break.”
Bennett says, “Although summer break is amazing and carefree, a longer spring break, in my opinion, would be perfect. With the amount of time spent flying or driving to your destination it leaves vacationers with only seven to eight full days in their destination. A longer spring break would be so awesome to because it would give more time to open your eyes to a new culture, which is essential to growing up.”
Spring break is said to be a time to relax and enjoy sometime away from school. However, when spring break is spent doing make up work and new assignments, it takes away from the relaxation students and teachers are striving for when they are vacationing.
The same goes for teachers as well. When they have to sit around and grade papers or assignments, it takes aways from the relaxation they deserve. Although some teachers and students may not mind the work they have to do over break, Bennett and England think homework assignments over break are unfair.
Bennett says, “Having to get off the beach in Belize to go do homework, was more than frustrating. For students to have to do homework assignments during break seems ridiculous to me.”
England says, “Although homework really does suck, during break it is not too bad. It is something to do for the kids who are just sitting around at home. For the kids sitting in the car for long or even short time periods the car is a great place to get some stuff done. A plane is the equivalent to a library minus the books. It is an awesome place to get some homework done and even to just study.”
