Now that fall is settling in, it’s getting chilly, pumpkin spice lattes are coming back, and days feel longer. It’s time for that summer playlist to switch up and upgrade to some niche songs for the school year.
As the internet investigates singer and songwriter D4vd, and the same five songs play on the radio station, it feels like a music recession. Students at Arrowhead have a few suggestions and thoughts on what songs should be added to that playlist in the works, and some underground artists that they think deserve more recognition.
Music taste is diverse and completely up to personal opinions; however, there’s always the unexpected chance to find enjoyment in a genre or artist unlike your usual taste.
“I think more people should know about Jonn,” Sofia Ruminski-Hall, sophomore, said. “He’s popular for making music in YouTube short videos, and I would describe him as R&B, but he doesn’t really have a lot of songs out.”
Ruminski-Hall also suggests the song “Bruno is Orange” by Hop Along as a song that’s important for people to hear. She had researched the meaning behind it, finding that it expresses the relationship between an African American man and a Caucasian woman’s relationship from when interracial couples were rejected from the norm of society.
“Underrated artist would be Yungmorpheus, and underrated song would probably be ‘Still Not a Player’ by Big Pun and Joe,” Joseph Pierce, sophomore, said. He is proud of the evolution of his music taste over time, and has his own type of playlist of his top hits. Lately, he’s been listening to A Tribe Called Quest, which is the group that has received acknowledgement for encouraging the neo soul genre.
