Meet Mr. Newton Smerchek, one of the new Arrowead PE Teachers. Mr. Smercheck started at Arrowhead last year and has loved it here ever since. He teaches Adventure Gym and Peer Mentor PE along with Mrs. Martin.
Adventure gym is a class open to all students, grades 9-12, that includes high ropes course and low challenge courses, indoor climbing wall, and other outdoor pursuits that may include navigation skills, biking, fishing, kayaking, archery, hiking, ice bocce, and appreciation of the outdoors.
Peer Mentor PE is also open to all grades, where you work with kids with disabilities and help them do gym. Mr. Smerchek previously worked as a volunteer wrestling coach and fundraiser for the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s club. He later served as a building substitute teacher at Sun Prairie East High School. He attended college at Central Michigan University.
“I absolutely loved everything about being here,” Mr. Smerchek said. “The people are unbelievable here, including the students and everyone who makes this school amazing, from the maintenance to the administration, and of course, the teachers. It is an honor to be at this school, and I hope to do my part to be supportive of it all.”
Mr. Smerchek plans on being here for years to come and is looking forward to the future here at Arrowhead. “I am excited to continue to build connections with staff, students, and community members as I continue to work in this school,” Mr. Smerchek said. “I am also excited to do everything I can to continue the tradition that this is truly the best place in the world to be.”
